The bell tower-porch of Sainte-Marie-de-Mimizan church is the last vestige of an important 12th-century Benedictine priory. Behind its brick walls lies one of the finest sculpted portals in south-west France. Created in the early 13th century, this jewel of medieval art has preserved its polychrome decoration and features one of France's oldest depictions of Santiago de Compostela. The bell tower-porch also features 15th-century murals. Classified as a historic monument in 1903 and 1995. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1998, thanks to the Chemins de St Jacques.
A museum area completes the visit. The exhibition traces the natural and human history of the area, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.
